Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? I see a Year One class doing brilliantly.

Maths
Last week we were halving, learning to to make 2 equal groups - when we start real smart stuff like multiply and dividing we'll know this is dividing by 2... but that's not for a few weeks.

We started off doing this physically with manipulatives
 "Half of 4 is 2"

"This one was easy peasy, half of 2 is 1"

"Miss Morris I counted out 30 of them and shared it into groups by moving 2 at a time, then split the last 2 to make 15"

"I found half of 18!"

"I have 2 groups of 4 now"

"Is this going on the blog Miss Morris? I want to show my mum."

Leila found half of 12 = 6

"It's like a pattern, 6 on this side and 6 on the other."

"This took forever! I thought there would be 23 on each side because half of 4 is 2 and half of 6 is 3. I was right!"

This week we moved onto applying our knowledge of addition and subtraction to number and word problems. You see the colour blocks on the side of the page? That's us doing the Chili Challenge. The children pick the level of questions they think they are capable of. Blue being straight forward, green is a bit trickier and then red is a real challenge.

To set us up for the reasoning side of word problems we started to draw out the question like Lucia and Lacey are showing here:

Leila used stickers to make her number sentences.

Sometimes we need a little bit of a push to keep up the challenge

Hugh crossed out blobs when he was taking away.

Then when it came to the word problems we could draw out the story that is told in the question.
Jack's questions here were
Leopard saw 6 monkeys in one tree
and
2 monkeys in another tree.
How many monkeys did he see
altogether?

Ronald had 7 muddy spots on his back.

The rain washed 2 of them away.

How many muddy spots were left?

 English
We finished off our Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you see stories! They turned out amazingly as you can see...
Some children repeated the pattern by describing the colour of an animal, sometimes fictional colours. Some children looked at the sounds animals make. Some children wrote about the movement animals make.
Here are some of the fabulous pieces of work.

Remembrance
We celebrated remembrance by making poppy pictures. We used half apple (cross curricular to maths eat your heart out!!!) to print the poppy onto out page, then using different parts of our fingers to make the black center and green leaf poking out.
The once dried we added the phrase WE WILL REMEMBER. We talked about how thankful we were for the people who gave their lives and bodies to make sure we are safe.

Anti-Bullying week
The theme for 2017 is
Image result for antibullying week

We had a discussion about what this meant.

Aaron summed it up quite nicely by saying, "It's like we can be good at different things, but that doesn't make us better than everyone else." Kaysie joined in say "I have blonde hair and Eesah has brown hair. His hair isn't more good than mine, and mine isn't either." I was quite pleased with their understanding of it.

We then started to think about the similarities we have, rather than just focusing on the differences. Did you know there are 8 people in the class with cats? Well that's what we found out. Something else we have in common is there are 17 girls in the class. The thing that we all had in common is that we thought Miss Morris was the coolest thing ever... no just kidding we all love play time.

For a display we made painting of our faces. In assembly we will share them and show the other children in school the ways we are the same and the ways we are different.
