Science week

Science Week has be very eventful. We have stuck to the theme of wet and wild!!

We kicked off the week with an investigation into the capacity of circles using coloured water and pipettes.  We had to count how many drops of water it would take to fill the circle. We predicted that "the bigger the circle, the more water it would take to fill it, because big jars hold more water than small jars."

Half way through the week, we teamed up with year 3 to make a flotation device for a action figure.
We came up with three criterion they needed to meet to float:

  1. Must be light because heavy things sink.
  2. To contain pockets of air because like in the bath, bubbles of gas travel upwards ;)
  3. Have a large surface area for the water to push against.

We worked in mixed teams of Year 3 and Year 1. First we had a look at the material choices, discussed a plan then drew out what it would look like on a whiteboard.

After that we made our flotation devices.

Then tested them out in the water.

The Science homework you brought in has been AMAZING! Here we have some troll slime.

A weather vane to tell wind direction

A bag of "yellow" mixture

A weather station

A potion with syrup, oil and green paint.

Some fizzing fairy juice

A weather station with a weather chart to display the current weather and temperature.

Slugsy came to school for a visit. All the children who wanted to got a hold of him.

The to top the day off we made lava lamps with two solutions that don't mix.

It looks like a the children have really enjoyed themselves and been completely unaware we've actually been doing work and learning things because its been so fun.

OOOOO and number 1 on the Sandridge top of the pops chart is the water cycle
Play it and enjoy hours of it cycling through your head unwanted. The children love it though and the words are easy to pick up. You have been warned.

English
In English we have just finished our unit on sense poetry about Autumn time. For a bit of inspiration we went on a sense walk. Which involved the children walking around the Year 1 garden looking for signs of Autumn. The children took these pictures themselves using the ipads.
"crunchy brown leaves"
"Look at the big fat orange pumpkin!"
 "it smells sweet"
 "It is bumpy"
 "My leaf is yellow"

 "It smells like wood"
 "It smells woody"
"The leaves rustle in the trees"
 "The leaves are colourful"

 "This stick smells yucky."

Then for a bit of fun we had a leave fight. Poor Mrs Ivory being on the receiving end of some of these throws.

This was the starting point for some beautiful writing. We came back into the classroom to brainstorm all of the new of vocabulary we found outside. We tried really hard to make sure we were using the prompts around the room to have vocabulary rich poems.

Here are some of the final products.
