Welcome new Year 1s!

We've had a lovely rest over the Summer Holidays and we've heard about some of the fun things you have been up to. The Year One team are geared up and ready to hit this new year with a bang!

So far this week we have been working on our fine motor skills

Some of us use our left hand to write and some of us use our right hand.

Made cars and other creations with kid knex.

 "I made a necklace."
 Trying to make patterns.

 Building with Lego.

"My chain is 15 links long."

"I made a heart shape."

Maths
We've been singing lots of songs that involve counting on and back. Such as five little men in a flying saucer, five little monkeys jumping on the bed and five speckled frogs. I've added the links to some versions I found on youtube so you can sing along at home.

English
On Wednesday we started to think about some of the fun things we got up to over the Summer Holidays. Our main focus was to use capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. Then we had a news bulletin to share our writing with others in the class.

"On Tuesday I went to Keenan's house and we played Star Wars."

Science
In the afternoon we started to think about our Science topic for this half term and went in search of plants in the Year 1 garden and around the field.

"These flowers are pretty."

"Look at this little yellow flower."

The pumpkins are growing nicely, which were planted last year in the gardening club with Mr and Mrs Boxer.

"Apples on an apple tree."

"The tomatoes are going red."

"I found some roots."

"The leaves are turning brown and falling off the tree."

Geography
We will be learning about our local area this half term. We thought about our route to school by looking at Google Maps; what we passed along the way, such as houses, lamp posts, and post boxes. We tried to remember what buildings we knew were in the village; such as the village shop, the church, school, and the pubs.
After that, we decided to make these buildings to create a map for a display in the classroom. Some built them using Lego and Duplo while others drew them. Lacey put some extra detail into hers by drawing on the roof tiles and Noah gave the church lots of grey stone bricks, he also taught me that the church is over 900 years old.

"I'm building my house only with white bricks."

It's been a lovely first week back and we're very hopeful for the year ahead.

Reminder
Year One's "Meet the teacher" session is on Friday 15th September at 9 am. To discuss the curriculum this year, timetable, homework and phonics. It would be lovely to see you there.
