Some nuggets of greatness from last term

Maths
In maths we have been looking at shaped and position. Here we are learning about positional language and what better way than a game of hide and seek to then describe where we were.
"COMING READY OR NOT!!!!"

"I'm next to the piano, te he."

"I'm inside this gymnastics thingy."

No peeking Mr...

"Hiding under here in the best place"

"I'm only gonna give you 15 seconds... be quick!"

"I hope he doesn't find me between the benches."

"Uh oh! He did."

"I hided under the table cloth."

"The piano is in front, so he won't see me."

"THIS IS THE BEST LESSON EVER!!!!"

"I'll count to 100."

"I'm hiding beneath the gym equipment."

"We're under here together like sardines."

Even Mr Sherwood had a go at hiding.

The children we full of giggles and the right kind of talk. This really helped to kick start our week on positional language.

We moved on to find balanced sums. This means to make two sums that equal the same amount. Such as 9+1 = 5+5, that Freddie has made using numicon as they both add up to equal 10.

We tried to show the balanced sums using a variety of manipulatives to show our deep understanding of the balanced sum concept.

Using balance scales really showed visually how the sums were the same amount.

Fractions fun, what better way to show our understanding of halves and quarters of a shape than cutting jam tarts and pancakes in half and then half again to make 2 halves, then 4 quarters.

Then afterwards we were allowed to eat them a quarter at a time and a half at a time.

TASTY!

Pizza designing. We have decided as a class the Dominoes half and half pizza is a great idea, however we think it should be a quarter, quarter, quarter and quarter pizza. So we made some.

English
In English we learnt some poetry off by heart and performed it in groups to the rest of the class.

We made our own poetry inspired by poppy day. Poppy poetry

Mrs Hull did lots of cooking with us. First we tasted root salads, such as coleslaw, potato salad, beetroot salad. Potato salad was our favourite so we make some of our own. We sliced new potatoes into smallish chunks.

Then we chopped up chives and added them to the potatoes.

Carefully added mayonnaise to the bowl.

After that we stirred it all together.

 Finally the best bit. Tasting.

To tie in with the festival of light, Divali, we made Diva lamps. Divali means "rows of lighted lamps".

People light lots of small oil lamps called diyas.  They are placed around the home and in gardens to remember how Rama and Sita were welcomed home.

Hindus believe that by lighting these lamps, the goddess Lakshmi will visit them and bring them wealth.

For the last week before Christmas we learnt about the story of advent. Then made our own Christingles, where we found out about all of the symbolism with them.

The orange represents the world.

The red ribbon symbolises the love and blood of Christ.

The sweets and dried fruit represent all of God’s creations.

The lit candle represents Jesus’s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness.

Christmas
Christmas jumper day was a lot of festive fun. Everyone made a fantastic effort and really got us into the Christmas mood.

To get us further in the mood we sang some carols during assembly. The highlight of my week. The whole school singing 12 days of Christmas, with actions, being performed by Miss Roberts as a snowman. Not a video to be missed.

Then in the afternoon we were paid a very exciting visit from a special visitor.

Another massive event of Christmas, our KS1 concert. I'm so proud with how hard everyone worked and I'm sure those who came to watch will agree they were AMAZING!!!

2016 has been a great year for year 1 and 2017 has the potential to be even better.

Miss Morris' new year resolutions:
  1. Update the blog at least once a fortnight.
  2. Drink more water.
  3. To go home before 7:00pm.
